Searching for local plumbers can be a bit of a minefield, there will be an abundance of people you could choose from, so, how do you decide which to go for? It can be tempting just to do a quick search online, and pick the top result, but like all trades, finding a good plumber isn’t easy, and it’s not a decision you want to take lightly. 

Below are some factors you should bear in mind when choosing a plumber.

Ask About Qualifications

This is probably one of the most important factors. If you have a very simple plumbing problem, and you fancy tackling it yourself then you may be in the green. But, if not, always opt for a local plumber who is qualified. 

In order to ensure you get a plumber who is adequately qualified, look for those who display trade association logos on their website, or who are listed on the trade association website. The main trade associations you should keep an eye out for are.

Cost

Another thing that will be high up your priority list when choosing a plumber is cost. Unfortunately there aren’t a set of standardised charges across the industry, however, getting a quote from a few different plumbers can give you an idea of a ballpark figure. 

Remember, you are paying for expertise, not just the time spent on the job. It is probably better to pay an expert a higher rate, even if he is in and out in 20 mins, compared to paying a cowboy local plumber who fiddles around for 2 hours.

Local or National

There are advantages and disadvantages when it comes to opting for a local plumber or a national plumber. 

Local plumbers will be more flexible with price and may be willing to negotiate. They also may offer better customer service, as they can’t afford to have their reputation tarnished by bad reviews. Opting for a local plumber also means you are supporting a small business. 

National plumbers, however, may be able to get to you quicker, as they employ so many people. You may find, however, that the prices are higher.
